
Why Your IR Heater Needs a Real Emergency Stop
Industrial infrared lamps pack a serious punch. If they’re left running unchecked, that heat density can warp your frames or set contaminants on fire before you even realize there’s a problem. We build our systems for the smaller coating shops—the folks who need high-output heat but don’t want to pay the “big brand” tax. But here’s the deal: when you’re dealing with that much power, you need a way to kill it instantly.
The reality of the “Big Red Button”
An E-stop isn’t just a fancy button for show. It’s a physical break in the power circuit. With shortwave halogen tubes, the heat hits almost instantly. If a conveyor jams or a part starts smoking, you can’t sit around waiting for a PLC to slowly ramp the power down. You don’t have time for a “graceful shutdown.” That’s why we wire our systems to kill the contactor the second you hit that button. It cuts the current to the lamps immediately. Period.
The “Hidden” Heat Problem
Now, just because the power is off doesn’t mean the lamps are cold. Quartz tubes hold onto heat. Even after you hit the E-stop, they’ll keep radiating heat for a few seconds. This is where people mess up. If your cooling fans die at the same time as your lamps, you’re asking for trouble. That trapped heat can soak right into your reflectors and ruin them. Make sure your fans stay powered even when the heating circuit is dead. It’s a small detail that saves a lot of money.
Don’t go the “DIY” route
In a lot of powder coating or drying lines, I see these “homegrown” setups where someone decided to skip the E-stop to save a few bucks. It’s a huge mistake. When you’re running high-wattage arrays, one failed relay can turn into a thermal nightmare very quickly. We designed our controllers to be easy, drop-in replacements for those overpriced brands, but we keep the safety loop hard-wired. It keeps your team safe and keeps your gear from melting into a puddle during a malfunction. Keep your wiring clean, and for heaven’s sake, make sure that E-stop is somewhere you can actually reach it.
