
Stop Wasting Your Heat: How Halogen Reflectors Actually Work
Here is the problem with standard quartz heaters: they throw energy in every single direction. If you’re running one in an industrial oven, about half that heat is just warming up the back wall or the machine frame. It’s a total waste. That’s where the reflector comes in. By putting a polished piece of aluminum or a gold-coated shield behind the filament, we basically tell that infrared radiation, “Nope, go this way.” It bounces the heat forward and slams it right into your workpiece. Turning a lamp into a heat gun Think of it like this: the reflector turns a glowing tube into a directional beam. The best part? You get way more heat density on your target without actually cranking up the wattage. When you’re picking one out, you want a tight beam angle. It means you can pull the heater further back from the part but still hit those target temperatures. It gives you some breathing room in your setup. The nitty-gritty on materials We use high-purity quartz for the envelopes because the internal pressure of a halogen cycle is no joke—it needs to be tough. As for the reflectors, we usually go with elliptical or parabolic shapes. Aluminum is the go-to for most jobs, but if you’re working with the long-wave spectrum, gold is the way to go. It just reflects better. You’ll see these with different footprints, like R7s or SK15 connectors. These aren’t just about making them easy to plug in. They’re designed to keep the electrical contact rock-solid so you don’t get any nasty arcing when the current hits. The trade-off (and how to avoid a meltdown) There is a catch, though. Because the reflector traps heat to push it forward, the back of the lamp gets a lot hotter than a bare tube would. If you just set it and forget it, you’re going to fry your seals and kill the lamp’s lifespan. You’ve got to get your cooling fans positioned just right to pull that hot air away from the assembly. Do that, and you’ll see your cycle times drop because the energy is finally going exactly where it belongs.
