Stop Heating the Air: Why Your Shop Needs Infrared
Most powder coating shops are basically paying to heat a giant metal box. You turn on those massive convection ovens and wait while they warm up the air and the walls before the actual part even feels a thing. It’s a waste of time and a drain on your electric bill. Lately, we’ve seen a lot of guys make the switch to short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. The logic is simple: stop heating the room and start heating the part.
How it actually works
Convection is all about moving air. IR is different. It uses radiation that hits the powder and the metal directly. It’s fast. Really fast. Because you hit the curing temperature so much quicker, your parts spend way less time in the oven. If you can shave 30% off your cycle time, you’re suddenly pushing way more product through the door without having to rent a bigger warehouse.
The nitty-gritty on the hardware
If you’re swapping out old heating elements for quartz halogen tubes, you can’t just “plug and play.” These tubes pack a punch. Before you start, take a look at your power supply. If you’re dropping in 400V high-output tubes, make sure your wiring and contactors can actually handle that kind of current draw. You don’t want to melt something. And a pro tip: use R7s or SK15 connectors. Get a tight fit. If the connection is loose, it’ll arc at those high temperatures and fry your sockets. Not a fun way to spend a Tuesday.
The catch (because there’s always one)
IR is a beast, but it has a blind spot. It’s line-of-sight. If your parts have deep pockets or weird, complex shapes, the lamp can’t “see” those areas. That means you get cold spots. You can’t just throw the lamps in and walk away; you have to angle them so the heat overlaps. It takes a bit of tinkering to get it right. But here’s the best part: switching to domestic IR tech makes maintenance a lot less stressful. When you aren’t relying on expensive imports, the cost per lamp drops. You stop stressing every time a tube burns out because the lead time is short and the price doesn’t break the bank. It just makes the whole operation run smoother.
